How Many Gig Workers Are There in the United States?
Updated: Sep 8, 2021
Recently, we posted an article defining what a Gig Worker is. We made the argument that you and I know more Gig Workers than we think. There are so many people who are working their side Gig to make a few extra bucks or to test a new career path. And you’re probably one of them.
But just how many people in the United States are engaged in Gig Work?
According to Statista, in 2021, there are a staggering 68 million people who are engaged in Gig Work in some form or fashion. With a total U.S. adult population of 258.3 million people, that works out to this crazy statistic:
26.3% of adults in the United States are Gig Workers!
That’s over a quarter of the adult population! By 2028, Statista predicts that Gig Workers will number 90.1 million people, increasing 32.35% in just the next 7 years alone.
This is not to say that Gig Work is their only source of income. The fact of the matter is that most of these 68 million people (and soon to be 90 million) have traditional 9am-5pm jobs as well and they work on their Gig during off hours. This is their side hustle.
But that side hustle generates an annual revenue of over $296.7 billion!
With an industry that will see double digit growth for the foreseeable future, now is the time for you to take advantage of the world we are in and grow your Gig Worker business.
